Area rugs can add much more to the design of a room than anticipated. Imagine the room in the picture above without the rug. Or, with a different rug. The design would take on a completely different personality. That’s the beauty of area rugs. With a wide selection of designs to choose from you can get very creative and create a space that is truly unique. Choosing the best rug for your space can get tricky, especially if you are trying to tie in patterns, colors, etc. with existing furnishings.

Where To Begin

Consider your lifestyle. Do you have children or pets? You may want to consider darker colors to help hide stains. Is it a high traffic area? Choose a rug that can handle the wear and tear. If you want to create an intimate space, go for deep, rich colors. Is the space smaller? Consider light colors which will make the space appear larger. Looking for a calm atmosphere? Cool colors with help with that, especially in a room with a lot of natural light.

Tips For Choosing The Correct Rug Size

First you need to consider the size of your space, the shape of your space, and your furniture placement. Then, consider some of the following options.

Living Room

If you have an open-concept space or furniture that floats in the room (nothing is against a wall) consider a layout where all the legs of your furniture are on the rug. This will anchor the room and create a defined seating area.

If you have furniture against a wall consider a rug that is sized to allow just the front legs of your furniture to be on the rug. Be sure to choose a size that allows all of your furniture to be placed with the front legs on the rug to create a cohesive look.

If you have a small or narrow space consider a rug that fills just the seating area.

Dining Room

The rug should be big enough to allow all the legs of your chairs to fit on it, even when pushed back. In general, this should be about 36 inches beyond the edge of the table.

Bedroom

A popular option is to have the rug extend about 2/3 of the way under the bed, leaving 18-24″ on the sides and front of the bed.

You can also choose to have a rug size that allows for the all legs of the bed, and any nightstands to be placed on it. As a general rule, you don’t want it to extend to so far that it encroaches on walkways.
