Design Inspiration from the Pasadena Showcase House

I found myself in the right place at the right time again this year, landing in California just as the Pasadena Showcase House was open for tours. Some of you may know that I lived in Pasadena for a while and this tour was always on my must-do list. The design elements never disappoint and I’m thrilled I had a chance to revisit the area and bring back inspiration from this stunning showcase.

A Glimpse into the Pasadena Showcase House

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design, now in its 59th year, is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious home and garden tours. Each year, a different historic estate in Pasadena is renovated by a team of top designers, transforming the property into a stunning showcase of contemporary design trends and timeless elegance. The 2024 showcase features the Potter Daniels Manor, a grand English Tudor Revival-inspired estate, rich with history and architectural splendor (Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts) (Visit Pasadena).

This year’s house features an array of beautifully designed spaces, from the Jewel Box Tea Room by Samantha Williams Interior Design to The Silver Queen Kitchen by Hermogeno Designs. Each room showcases the designers’ creativity and skill in blending modern elements with the home’s historic charm (Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts) and included a collaboration with one of my favorite vendors, Thibaut.

Bringing Showcase Inspiration to Pittsburgh

  1. Historic Charm Meets Modern Elegance:
    • Restoration and Preservation: Just as the Potter Daniels Manor combines historical preservation with modern updates, we can incorporate similar principles in Pittsburgh’s historic homes. Restoring original features such as hardwood floors, moldings, and fireplaces while introducing contemporary fixtures and furnishings can create a harmonious blend of old and new.
    • Architectural Details: Embrace the architectural details that are often found in Pittsburgh’s historic homes. Elements like wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and intricate woodwork can be highlighted and preserved to maintain the home’s character.
  2. Lush Outdoor Spaces:
    • Gardens and Landscaping: The Pasadena Showcase House is renowned for its beautifully landscaped grounds. In Pittsburgh, we can take advantage of our lush, green landscapes by designing outdoor living spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Consider creating garden pathways, outdoor seating areas, and incorporating native plants to enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings.
    • Terraces and Patios: Adding terraces or patios with comfortable seating and outdoor dining areas can extend the living space and provide a perfect spot for entertaining or relaxing.
  3. Innovative Interior Design:
    • Color Palettes and Textures: Drawing inspiration from the showcase, we can experiment with rich color palettes and diverse textures. Deep, saturated colors paired with luxurious fabrics like velvet and silk can create a sophisticated ambiance while still being ‘livable.’
    • Functional Spaces: Design spaces that cater to modern lifestyles while retaining an elegant feel. For example, a sunroom can be transformed into a cozy reading nook, or a formal dining room can be updated with contemporary lighting and furniture to create a versatile space for both everyday meals and special occasions.
  4. Sustainable and Local Materials:
    • Eco-Friendly Design: Emulate the sustainability efforts seen in the showcase by using eco-friendly materials and practices. Reclaimed wood, recycled materials, and energy-efficient appliances can contribute to a greener home.
    • Local Artisans: Collaborate with local artisans and craftsmen to incorporate unique, handcrafted pieces into your designs. This not only supports the local economy but also adds a distinct, personal touch to the interiors.

The blend of historic charm and modern sophistication seen in the showcase serves as a perfect model for creating timeless, beautiful spaces that reflect our city’s rich heritage and vibrant future.
